7th Women’s Spring Scramble

RiverCrest crew prevails at Cobblestone Creek

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. — Patricia Angelos’ birdie putt stops a revolution short. A collective gasp from her teammates.

Marsha Herb’s birdie putt hangs on the lip. A collective bellowing — “fall in, fall in” — from her teammates.

Delia Keys’ birdie putt finds the bottom of the cup. A collective cheer from her teammates — and a “Rock on girls” from a resident behind the 11th hole at Cobblestone Creek Country Club (par 71, 5,023 yards).

This is a snapshot of the team spirit among RiverCrest Golf Club & Preserve’s Angelos, Herb, Keys and Christina Yeager. It also served as the start of a scoring stretch that somersaulted the quartet to victory in First Flight of the 7th Women’s Spring Scramble at a pleasant Cobblestone Creek Monday.

The RiverCrest team filed a net score of 14-under-par 57 to edge two-time defending champions Grace Battista of LuLu Country Club, Jackie Beck of Lehigh Country Club, Mary Kate Lynch of Steel Club and Katrin Wolfe of Northampton Country Club.

The Women’s Spring Scramble, which signifies the beginning of the GAP Women’s Schedule, includes a Net Scramble format. Flights were created based on combined team Handicap Indexes.

Commonwealth National Golf Club’s Heather Bassman, Robin Lawlor, Karen and Karli Schilling won the Second Flight with a score of 13-under-par 58.

The event featured a shotgun start. The RiverCrest team, which started on No. 16 (par 4, 335 yards), arrived at No. 11 (par 3, 132 yards), the team’s 13th hole, needing a charge. It delivered on accelerant when Keys converted a 28-footer for birdie. The team used her 9-iron tee shot. Both Angelos and Herb saw their birdie putts throw a shoe inches before the finish line. Keys made good.

“When hers went in, that was amazing,” Herb, 62, of Wayne, Pa., said.

On the next hole (par 4, 320 yards), Herb hit a pitching wedge 112 yards to 12 feet. Yeager, the first to putt all day, converted the birdie putt. The RiverCrest team narrowly missed a 30-footer for eagle on No. 13 (par 5, 378 yards), leaving it on the high side. It tapped in for birdie there. Herb’s solid sand wedge on the par 3, 90-yard 14th hole afforded a 10-foot look. Keys again made good on the birdie try.

“We didn’t need chip shots. We hit a lot of greens in regulation,” Yeager, 47, of Phoenixville, Pa., said. “The course was really nice.”

“It was a great group effort,” Keys, 61, of Royersford, Pa., added.

Keys is the RiverCrest ringleader. When asked who assembled the team, the team pointed to Keys. When asked who decided on pink shirts as a team uniform, again Keys is singled out.

Safe to say she held the keys to victory?

“Delia is a maniac. She practices all of the time,” Angelos, 69, of Newtown Square, Pa., said. “Nobody cared whose ball we used. There were no sorrys out there. Just hit it.”

The quartet met at RiverCrest through its women’s programming. Herb and Keys are both members of 25 years, Angelos and Yeager 11.

Of note, RiverCrest will oppose Merion Golf Club for the Philadelphia Cup in the Women’s Golf Association of Philadelphia Team Matches tomorrow at The 1912 Club. Keys is a member of the RiverCrest team.

NOTE — BMW, sponsor of the GAP Team Matches, Philadelphia Amateur and Women’s Championship, made a special appearance at the event. Throughout the day, participants experienced an opportunity to test drive some of BMW’s newest models and receive gifts from BMW staff.
